Introduction
The elemental analysis of petroleum products presents some known challenges, like volatility of samples that can destabilize or even extinguish the plasma. Also, carbon may build up in the sample introduction system and deposit on the interface cones. Contaminations with common elements, such as silicon (Si), phosphorus (P) and sulfur (S), of solvents used to dilute petroleum samples before analysis can affect their levels of detection. However, the biggest challenges are spectral interferences. Fortunately, PerkinElmer’s NexION® ICP-MS instruments can easily overcome these challenges. This work demonstrates the ability of the NexION 2200 ICP-MS to effectively analyze petroleum products for five selected challenging elements.
