Introduction

In the production of lithium-ion secondary batteries, additives are often incorporated into cathode materials to enhance battery performance. Commonly used additives include aluminum, zirconium, tungsten, boron, titanium, and magnesium at levels typically greater than 1000 mg/kg.

Since battery performance relies on these additives, it is essential to precisely measure them. However, one of the challenges of this analysis is that the sample matrix is much heavier than the acids used to make the calibration standards, resulting in significant signal suppression, which greatly affects the accuracy of the results.

This work demonstrates the ability of the Avio® 550 Max ICP-OES to accurately measure aluminum, boron, and zirconium additives in NCM 622 cathode material.
