Introduction

Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) has become the preferred method for detecting trace-level amounts of elements like lead, arsenic, mercury, and copper in bodily fluids such as urine, blood, saliva, and tissue. However, analyzing trace elements in urine using ICP-MS presents a challenge, given the complex composition of the matrix.

However, thanks to the proprietary design of the NexION® 5000 multi-quadrupole ICP-MS, by employing a simple dilution of the urine samples with a suitable diluent, it is possible to measure panels or individual analytes quickly and accurately in the urine matrix, without upstream digestion of the samples.
